'If it's not disruptive it doesn't get news' – Chris Packham backs Just Stop Oil in London slow walk

“IF IT isn’t a disruptive protest it doesn’t get news,” broadcaster and naturalist Chris Packham said at Just Stop Oil continued their “slow walk” tactic through London today.

In the latest stage of the campaign launched five weeks ago activists have staged daily slow walks in the centre of Britain’s capital.

The campaigners are demanding an end to all new oil, gas and coal projects in Britain and warn of horrific environmental and social consequences if global warming continues.

But the government is continuing to issue licences for new oil and gas exploration in the North Sea.

Tomorrow campaigners in three groups marched slowly in the West End, Maida Vale and Tottenham.

One protester, Margaret Reid, 52, a former museum worker from Cumbria said: “How is it that despite horrific daily evidence of more and more extreme weather events, crop failure and the resulting societal unrest, this genocidal government is persisting in its greedy pursuit of new oil and gas licences?

“Do we have to wait until all our supermarket shelves are empty, our infrastructure is collapsing and our families are dying from extreme heat before we do something? One day our children will ask us ‘what did you do to avert this crisis’ and we better be prepared to give them a good answer.”

On Sunday campaigners will mount a slow walk in Parliament Square from noon.

Just Stop Oil’s actions since the start of 2022 have seen over 2,000 arrests and 138 people jailed. Since the resumption of “slow walk” protests on April 24, there have been 71 arrests for this.
