NUJ release statement after Sky News reporters are shot at in Syria

THE National Union of Journalists (NUJ) called for international condemnation today after Sky News journalists in Syria were targeted by President Bashar al-Assad’s military.

Sky’s special correspondent Alex Crawford reported that her crew had been attacked with tank shells during the bombardment of jihadist-held Idlib province.

Footage shows Ms Crawford and her team coming under fire before the group scramble to find their car.

She said the crew were “clearly identified as journalists,” one of them with “press” written on his flak jacket and the other carrying a clearly marked green medical trauma pack.

NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet condemned the “outrageous act.”

She added: “Media workers should be allowed to work without such threats to their lives, which are clear breaches of international law.

“The attack on the Sky News team is also clearly intended to send a stark message to other journalists, and we must be united in our condemnation of such actions.”
