PA RECALL petition that could unseat disgraced MP Fiona Onasanya was opened to her Peterborough constituents today.

If it attracts the signatures of 10 per cent of eligible voters — about 7,000 people — Ms Onasanya will be forced out and a by-election called.

Ms Onasanya, a solicitor, served just 28 days of a three-month prison sentence for perverting the course of justice.

Jurors at the Old Bailey were told that she had colluded with her brother Festus to avoid a speeding fine by putting the name of an acquaintance of his who was out of the country at the time on a notice of intended prosecution she was sent to fill out.

Ms Onasanya, who was expelled from the Labour Party, has continued to receive her £77,379 salary as an MP. She was not subject to automatic removal as an MP as her sentence was less than 12 months.

She was elected in 2017 for Labour in the Cambridgeshire city by a majority of just 607 votes.

She is the second MP and the first in England to be subject to a recall petition since the procedure was introduced in 2015.

Recall petitions are launched when MPs receive a custodial sentence (including suspended sentences), are barred from the Commons for 10 sitting days or are convicted of providing false information about their expenses. The petition process will cost about £500,000, funded by central government.

The petition opened just a day after Ms Onasanya posted a video on her social media in which she pleads with voters to let her continue as their MP and maintains her innocence.
