The Fascinating Adventures of Little Bee
Beans On Toast

BEANS ON TOAST, otherwise known as Jay McAllister, with his catchy alt-folk tunes, has carved out for himself a career of a bit of a north-east London folk hero. But now he’s writing songs for a different type of audience.

His latest studio album, The Adventures of Little Bee, is a bit of a unique one. Bringing some new friends on board — nurse Jaime Adamsfield and teacher Lily Adamsfield, and with help from the animated Little Bee — they have written and illustrated a collection of 10 short stories and songs for kids.

Each story has an accompanying short song following Little Bee’s adventures across oceans, through woods, into space, and so on. But what makes this little album more entertaining than your average kids’ one is that every song is of a different genre — from folk (To The Sea), a bit of rockabilly (To The Woods), to the R’n’B-esque (To The City) and even a bit of synth (To Space, of course).

“This is really catchy, I just wanna hum along and dance to it,” said my own eight-year-old of the album. And he’s right; big and little kids will enjoy this one.

Unfortunately the live performances, which included crafts, kids’ discos and crowd participation have all bee(n) and gone, but here’s to hoping more are on the horizon for 2023!
