Music Warmduscher, Village Underground London

Turbo-charged triumph from rock'n'roll outlaws

A FOUR-BAND bill makes for a sold-out Village Underground and a heady room sees a tasty cross-section of the current south London scene at its most scintillating.

Before headliners Warmduscher, peripheral movers Meatraffle and Nuha Ruby Ra share the love with the fast-rising Squid and the latter have the room jumping. A persistent stage invader makes for all the moves yet the young and unnerved band plays on.

It's clear that the brunt of the audience is here to see the seven-piece Warmduscher and, as they take to the stage, the atmosphere slips into fevered turbo-charge.

US-born singer Clams Baker Jr is like a gonzo cross-stitch of late-period Elvis and Hunter S Thompson. It’s a big ole night and his joy and sense of celebration are palpable.

The Stetson-wearing singer notes the many familiar faces present and thanks them for the ongoing support before unleashing the lion’s share of freshly released third  LP Tainted Lunch, earlier declared Album of the Day on BBC 6 Music.

Big favourites Midnight Dipper, Burner and Disco Peanuts are turned with aplomb and cement Warmduscher’s sleazy demeanour live and on record.

As a rock'n'roll show, Warmduscher are up there with the best. They deliver the white heat akin to Primal Scream in their prime and the effortless humour of Brixton kingpins Alabama 3.

Tonight the hard work is complete. Another band of outlaws have taken what is theirs and a foothold on the higher peaks of popular music is now assured.
