THE Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team (JIT) into the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine in 2014 said today the missile responsible came from a Russian military unit.
Previously, the investigators have alleged that the rocket which destroyed the aeroplane, killing its 283 passengers and 15 crew, was supplied by Russia to anti-fascist rebels in the Donbass area, who declared the independent Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics and took up arms following the Maidan coup in Kiev earlier that year.
But now the JIT says the culprit was a Buk missile which came from the 53rd anti-aircraft brigade of the Russian military, based in the city of Kursk, basing its conclusion on “detailed analysis of images and photos.”
The Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur flight was allowed to proceed over the Donbass by Ukrainian authorities despite the ongoing battle of Shakhtarsk, which involved Ukrainian bombing of Donbass positions and anti-aircraft responses from separatist fighters. Russia has always denied any involvement.
