VAUGHAN GETHING faced a grilling over donations to his leadership campaign as he made his debut at First Minister’s Questions today.
Welsh Conservative leader Andrew Davies wanted to know whether the donations from a convicted businessman totalled £200,000, as has been reported.
The First Minister confirmed that the amount was correct and said that, once his campaign accounts were finalised, any money left over would go to Welsh Labour’s coffers.
Mr Davies said that Mr Gething had received the huge donation despite winning the support of less than a third of his Senedd colleagues, demanding to know what First Minister had done to show that “money can’t buy influence.”
Mr Gething replied that Welsh Labour governments have a “good track record” and that he “cannot make any ministerial decisions on matters affecting my constituency."
Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth asked the First Minister whether, since he was so good at raising money, he had managed to get a fair funding pledge for Wales from Sir Keir Starmer.
Mr Gething responded with his predecessor Mark Drakeford’s line that the Plaid Cymru leader was “obsessed” with internal Labour Party matters.
