Men’s Tennis Harris can’t keep grass-court heroics going as he suffers early SW19 exit

THE break-out summer of Britain’s Billy Harris came to an end today with a four-set defeat by Jaume Munar in the Wimbledon first round.

The 29-year-old from Nottingham, who spent most of his journeyman career travelling to lower-level events in a transit van until he landed a wild card for this year’s Championships, was beaten 6-4 6-4 3-6 6-3.

Harris was a surprise quarter-finalist at Queen’s Club, where he registered only his second and third ATP Tour wins, before reaching the semi-finals in Eastbourne.

But his Wimbledon debut was ended on a damp, blustery Court 15 by Spanish world number 63 Munar.

Harris was already a set down and level at 3-3 in the second when the first rain delay of this year’s Championships arrived.

After an hour’s wait, Munar promptly broke to take the second set and, although Harris rallied valiantly to win the third, the 27-year-old from Barcelona wrapped up victory in two hours and 46 minutes.
