TEACHERS supported trans colleagues at the National Education Union’s (NEU) annual conference today, after Wednesday’s landmark Supreme Court ruling on the legal definition of a woman.
Moving a successful motion for the creation of an annual national women’s conference, Torbay delegate Krystal Murrell-Bourke said that it would welcome “all who identify as women.”
Oldham delegate Laura Butterworth said: “We are a union for all women — what the hell is a biological woman?”
Warning that a union ban on supporting multi-academy trusts with “worsened terms and conditions” for NEU members could hurt LGBT campaign groups in receipt of funding from such trusts, Hounslow delegate Sara Ann Hope added: “This is vital work, especially in light of yesterday’s ruling.”
Britain’s highest court has ruled that the term “woman” in the Equality Act refers to biological sex, meaning trans women with a gender recognition certificate can legally be refused entry to single-sex spaces, if proportionate.
