Reach for the Star

Circulation manager BERNADETTE KEAVENEY reports back on the work of the readers and supporters’ groups holding events in their communities and the push for premium digital subscriptions for unions

LAST WEEK I reported on the work of the Glasgow Readers and Supporters’ Group. In an update to the news that they had all the stall gear stolen, I am glad to report that they still ordered papers for the weekend. They are joined by groups in Exeter, Edinburgh and Derby who all ordered papers. Papers have also gone to the South West TUC regional AGM which took place in Croyde Bay and to the CWU conference in Bournemouth.

Two key dates are on the horizon: International Workers Memorial Day and International Workers Day (May Day). If you are attending events on these days do get your orders in early for papers [email protected].

We are currently rolling out our big campaign promoting the premium digital subscription to trade union branches. We know from feedback we get at the various conferences we attend that the paper is well thought of and received but that not everyone wishes to commit to becoming a daily reader.

Our offer to branches will mean that we reach a new audience who are supportive and will read the paper without necessarily making the financial commitment themselves.

The target (I am target-driven, how else will I measure the success of a campaign?) is to get 400 branches on board reaching an additional 4,000 readers. If you would like more information on this campaign contact [email protected].

The editor has spoken at two readers and supporters’ events recently — one on Palestine put on by the Chelmsford group where it was promoted at the local mosque and churches, which was a good initiative and definitely helped boost attendance. The Newcastle groups meeting on Thursday was also well attended with the North of Tyne mayor in attendance and on the theme of 100 years of the Labour Party.

We cannot always promise the editor will attend meetings but do get in touch with [email protected] to see if we can help with speakers, themes and to promote events for the Morning Star.
