STUC Congress 2024 STUC debates AI threat to jobs and use of tech to spy on workers

USE of technology to spy on workers and of AI to undermine jobs were discussed at the Scottish TUC today.

Peter McKevitt of the United Road Transport Union said new driver-facing cameras were being used to monitor HGV drivers 24-7, “even when drivers are at rest.”

At a recent disciplinary he defended a driver who was accused of being too tired to drive because bosses had counted the number of times he had yawned, he pointed out.

The Communication Workers Union’s Pauline Rourke pointed to the “damaging and dehumanising aspect of AI,” which BT bosses were suggesting could cost up to 10,000 jobs, and called for urgent legislation to protect workers from its unregulated use.

National Union of Journalists delegate Simon Barrow pointed to the success of the US film industry strike over misuse of AI last year.

The AI debate was not just a question of regulation but “of who actually controls this life-changing tech, at the moment four or five corporations, but we are going to need a global commons.”
