Tory minister Stewart forced to apologise for lying on radio

TORY minister and Theresa May loyalist Rory Stewart was forced to immediately apologise today for making up a statistic about support for the PM’s Brexit deal while live on air.

The Courts and Justice Minister claimed on BBC Radio 5 Live that 80 per cent of the British public backed Ms May’s deal.

He said: “I think the game the Brexiteers are playing at the moment is extremely dangerous.

“They’re not being honest about the risks they’re taking and they’re risking us crashing out with no plan and no deal and that would be catastrophic for our economy and create huge divisions in British society.”

He then said that “the reason why 80 per cent of the British public support this deal,” before being interrupted by presenter Emma Barnett.

After Ms Barnett pressed him, he said he was “producing a number” to “illustrate what [he] believes,” before quickly adding: “I totally apologise and I take that back.”
