REPRESENTATIVES of the Venezuelan government and supporters of self-declared “interim president” Juan Guaido are in Norway for talks.
Elected President Nicolas Maduro thanked Norway for its efforts to promote “peace and stability” in his country, which has been threatened with war by the United States.
Mr Guaido, who holds the rotating presidency of the defunct National Assembly, has been backed in his unconstitutional bid for power – which has included a botched attempt to seize it by force – by the US, its Latin American allies and the European Union, though more than two-thirds of countries continue to recognise the legitimate authorities.
The US poured cold water on the talks, saying the only things up for discussion were the “conditions of [Maduro’s] departure, while Mr Guaido denounced “false dialogue” before the talks began.
Venezuela’s delegation will be led by Maduro aide Jorge Rodriguez, Miranda state Governor Hector Rodriguez and Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza, while Mr Guaido’s team is led by National Assembly member Stalin Gonzalez.
