Anti-gentrification activists clash with police over eviction of left-wing pub collective

ANTI-GENTRIFICATION activists clashed with hundreds of police today while attempting to prevent the eviction of the owners of a popular left-wing bar in Berlin.

The Syndikat, located in Neukolln neighbourhood since 1985, was told in September 2018 by a property management firm on behalf of the building’s elusive owners that they would have to leave by the end of the year.

The Syndikat decided to stay, becoming a battleground against rising rents in the German capital.

Close to two years after receiving the eviction notice, hundreds of police descended on the bar today, clashing with protesters who tried unsuccessfully to stop the eviction.

Syndikat’s building is owned by the London-based real-estate company The William Pears Group, which journalists from German publications Der Tagesspiegel and Correctiv found raked in over £40.4 million from its Berlin properties in 2017.

“We have no words. Thank you for your boundless solidarity, for the actions, for the hours together and for being so tireless on the street with us,” Syndikat tweeted today during the protests.

“We are sad, angry, but also happy to have such a huge support.

“We never give up. Not so long #PearsGlobal and co are not yet expropriated! We continue to fight for a city from below and for the places that make our neighbourhood worth living."
