HAITIAN protests have entered their fifth week with roads still blocked across the country today as opposition groups demand the resignation of President Jovenel Moise.

Demonstrations continued in towns and cities days after tens of thousands marched in the capital Port-au-Prince in an action called by Haitian artists.

A broad cross-section of Haitian society has joined the calls for Mr Moisie to resign with outrage over shortages of fuel and food with widespread poverty and unemployment.

He is accused of corruption, with allegations of the misuse of $2 million (£1.58m) of public funds from a Venezuelan subsidised oil programme that was earmarked for social projects.

Police have clashed with protesters and fired tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Prominent activists have been targeted as the government desperately clings on to power.

Former Prime Minister Evans Paul, a supporter of the president, said on Monday that the government would meet with opposition leaders to try to break the deadlock.

“We can put everything on the table,” Mr Paul said, adding that that includes the president’s mandate. 

“The country has to keep living. We’re clear that the president has lost the public’s support.”
