Indian trade unions to hold nationwide strike action

INDIAN trade unions will hold a nationwide general strike tomorrow in growing anger against the government’s “anti-people, anti-worker, anti-national and destructive” policies.

The action was called in a joint statement by 10 trade unions, which condemned the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attacks on the “basic workplace, democratic and constitutional rights of the workers and the people.”

Workers will put forward a seven-point demand, including calls against increasing the wealth of the country’s richest during the coronavirus pandemic as workers see their conditions worsen.

Debates and discussions on citizens’ rights, freedom of speech, the rights of minorities and other attacks by the government have been building public attention, and the trade unions are expecting a large turnout for the strike.

The general strike will be followed by a day of action on Friday, where protests are expected around the country.
