Man arrested in connection to Netherlands terror attack

POLICE arrested a man in the Netherlands yesterday in connection  to a suspected terror attack on a tram in Utrecht that left at least three dead and several injured.

Shootings were reported at other locations with police gathering outside a house on a street near the 24 Oktoberplein junction, where the attack took place.

Authorities released a photo identified as Gokmen Tanis, a 37-year-old man born in Turkey who they said was “associated with the incident.”

Dutch officials said the shooting “appears to be a terrorist attack.”

Spokesman Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg confirmed that there could be more than one suspect involved in the shootings.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte scrapped the government’s weekly coalition talks and said he was “deeply concerned.”

“If it is a terror attack then we have only one answer: our nation, democracy must be stronger that fanaticism and violence,” he said.

The suspect was still at large at the time the Star went to press.
