World in brief: April 3, 2025

UNITED STATES: Sales of the Tesla electric vehicle have fallen to their lowest level in three years, it was reported today.

The 13 per cent drop in the first three months of 2025, compared with the same period of last year, is largely attributed to a backlash against the company’s multibillionaire boss Elon Musk, who is also a top adviser to US President Donald Trump.

INDIA: The parliament passed widely criticised legislation today to amend laws governing Muslim land endowments.

The Bill would add non-Muslims to boards that manage waqf land endowments and give the government a larger role in validating their land holdings.

The government says the changes will help to fight corruption and mismanagement, but critics accuse it of undermining the rights of India’s Muslim minority.

SERBIA: University students who say their fight for justice and the rule of law is being overlooked are cycling 780 miles towards the heart of the European Union to seek support.

About 80 students set off on bicycles today for the French city of Strasbourg, aiming to draw EU attention to their anti-corruption protests.

The stunt will raise tensions in Serbia, a non-EU country, amid fears of foreign backing for protests.

TURKEY: Police detained 11 people today for supporting a one-day shopping boycott on Wednesday as part of protests against the imprisonment of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main rival, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

The city’s Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued arrest warrants for 16 suspects who are accused of “hatred and discrimination” and “inciting hatred and hostility” among the public, the Anadolu news agency reported.
